Nintendo Switch January 2017 Presentation Highlights: THE GAMES!

switch07

What an incredible showing by Nintendo! What a great time to be alive!

Nintendo Switch is set to launch on 3 March 2017 with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, ARMS, and 1, 2, Switch! confirmed as launch titles with more to be announced as we quickly head into the historic release.

Demo events are planned worldwide so we should be able to try the system over the next couple of months. The price point is $US 299.99 and hopefully we will get a confirmed $ AU price point soon.

I’m sure the stream gave you all the info you needed, so here are some quick and dirty game highlights from the stream!

Splatoon 2

switch05

I honestly would have settled for an enhanced expanded release of the original Wii U Splatoon but it’s a full fledged sequel folks and it’s set for 2017! Looks great from what we can see and the added mobility and portability of the Switch system will certainly make Splatoon 2 a title we can enjoy all day every day. A Splattershot peripheral was also revealed during the presentation but there’s so many ways to take control of the game. Splatoon was the absolute jewel of the Wii U library and the Switch could not have asked for a better title to help establish its footing in the market than Splatoon 2.

ARMS

switch02

A launch title for the Switch that essentially looks to be a spiritual and futuristic successor to the Nintendo’s legendary Punch Out! series. ARMS is fighting game that is all about swinging your fists and being able to extend them for some extra omph. Not to mention, the aesthetics give off some serious Overwatch and Splatoon vibes.

Mario Odyssey

switch08

An open world Mario game taking a page out of Super Mario 64 and the underrated Mario Sunshine is an absolute blissful surprise. Absolutely gorgeous looking game with an ambitious art and level direction… Mario is in a modern day city!!! Odyssey is a fitting title for sure, and what a great showcase of the raw potential of the Switch. Stepping out of the Mushroom Kingdom and going into unexpected locations will surely make this a most excellent adventure.

No More Heroes 3!!!!

switch12

Eccentric and legendary developer of Grasshopper Manufacture, Mr. Suda 51 himself, was on stage during presentation to declare his support for the Switch with a brand new title that will star everyone’s favourite jerk: Travis Touchdown. Travis Touchdown is better known for his assassination misadventures in No More Heroes and No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle on the Wii. Those two titles were among the hidden jewels of the Wii’s massive library, if not the most mature and thought-provoking metaphysical commentary on the lifestyle that is video games. Whether the Switch project ends up being No More Heroes 3 or something else entirely, it’s great to have the craziness of Suda 51 and Travis Touchdown strike again on a Nintendo system.

Shin Megami Tensei 25th Anniversary Game

switch11

Shin Megami Tensei celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2017. PlayStation may be getting Persona 5, but the Nintendo Switch will be getting the landmark celebratory 25th anniversary game that is likely to be mainline (dare I say… Shin Megami Tensei V?). Towards the end of 2016 we got the excellent Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse on the 3DS and so a new title is always welcome. Nothing major was disclosed other than a brief concept trailer showing all the demons and one of the main antagonists of Shin Megami Tensei IV, Odin. Could it be a spin off where you take control of Odin and wage an epic war? Time will tell.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

switch09

Xenoblade Chronicles is an ambitious Japanese RPG series that has pushed the Wii, Wii U, and even 3DS to its limits, and so it is only fitting for the Switch to receive the next iteration of the Xenoblade series. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sports an interesting new art style that almost made me believe it was a new game in the Secret of Mana series! There certainly seems to be a stronger focus on story and character development here, which is great because Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X, as great as they were, kind of felt like MMORPGS that were more focused on quests and hunts, rather than emotional role-playing and storytelling. A new look, stronger narration, and the same open world ambition is certainly going to make Xenoblade Chronicles 2 an awesome RPG showcase for the Switch.

Last but not least…

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Watch this one in silence… let the tears run.

  1. Seems this presentation got everyone talking though opinions on a range of things seem divided. For me, I’m not looking at console games these days so I’m only kind of vaguely interested in what the outcome of this will be once its been out for awhlie.
