In the more recent years, Square Enix have been doing some strange things with their number one IP Final Fantasy in the way of cross-promotion. With the latest iteration of the series, Final Fantasy XV, they have collaborated with Audi, Beats By Dre, and Nissin Cup Noodles in what can only be described as the most gratuitous product placement in video game history…barring perhaps Pepsiman. Look it up.
At this point in time it is expected for huge franchises like Final Fantasy developed by huge companies like Square Enix to gather money for a project wherever they can, or to build on a game’s popularity whenever they can. With Square Enix’s venture into the world of mobile RPGS, Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, is is a new collaboration between the game and real life superstar Ariana Grande that is not only confusing but exciting the world of both modern music and modern gaming.
In what I can only imagine is an attempt to give Brave Exvius a wider reach, Square Enix have decided to collaborate with Ariana Grande, adding her to the new mobile game as a playable character that can be added to your team. Within Brave Exvius, players can summon characters from across Final Fantasy’s long history to battle alongside the original characters that will serve as your team leaders. Now, added into the mix, is a stylised Ariana Grande sporting her bunny-like costume which can be seen on the cover of her latest album Dangerous Woman.
Miss Grande revealed this news to the world through Instagram after posting a picture of herself with what look to be Square Enix executives with the caption:
Pretty lil thing holds her own in a room of men in suits ♡ I’m SO so excited to finally share that I’ll be featured in FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS *crying* ♡
check out my character in the game, it’s the cutest thing i’ve ever seen in my entire life and i’m so excited and in love with it i cannot contain myself. #FFBEWW
Following this post was a second one containing a video of her in-game character in motion. This you can watch here.
While Final Fantasy and Square Enix are arguably the most popular entities to come out of the video game industry, they are seemingly nothing compared to the might of an American pop star, so if it was added popularity that the company was attempting to obtain with this new collaboration then, well…I truly think they’re on the money. Fans of Ariana Grande are already jumping on board with the mobile game, if not only for the sake of seeing their idol in video game action. Regardless, things like this work, and as long as they continue working, companies will continue doing it.
Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius is now available for both iOS and Android devices. Square Enix have not yet revealed whether or not the Ariana Grande character has been made official in-game, but you’ll know very soon once her character is made available.
