There are three specific Anime series from most of our childhoods that you would have experienced thanks to early morning television without even realising that they were indeed cartoons developed in the great land of Nippon, at least…that’s how it was for us living in Australia. Thank you, Cheese TV! Chances are you were a child lucky enough to catch many episodes of Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura; three series’ still as popular today as they were during their initial release period. The word “timeless” springs to mind, and these three particular shows are synonymous with it.
While Dragon Ball Z now has Dragon Ball Super (alongside a set of amazing new films), and Sailor Moon now has Sailor Moon Crystal, we tend to wonder what Cardcaptor Sakura is up to nowadays. Well, I can tell you that the series has not seen a steep decline in popularity, so despite the fact that we havn’t seen anything new from the CLAMP classic in quite some time, it remains in the hearts and minds of fans the worldwide even to this day, but it’s now 2016 and things are being put into motion. Things are starting to change, in big ways too!
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Cardcaptor Sakura original Manga series, and as such a celebration is called for, but standard festivities would not do this series justice, it’s fans simply wouldn’t stand for it! This is fine though, because what CLAMP are doing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their most popular Manga is, well…they’re continuing it! The June issue of Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine has just revealed that, for the sake of the series’ anniversary, CLAMP are going to be starting a brand-new Cardcaptor Sakura Manga that will take place after the events of the original.
Sakura has now graduated from Tomoeda Elementary School and has gone on to Junior High. Despite the fact that her life as a magical girl is, seemingly, behind her, she experiences an odd dream that looks as though her experience collecting the Clow Cards is going to be needed, once again. Unfortunately for those of you who are shaking in utter anticipation of this new Manga…that’s all that has been revealed of the story so far, but on the third of June you can expect the very first chapter of this new series to be featured in the aforementioned issue of Nakayoshi magazine. Unfortunately this is a Japan exclusive, but sooner or later the series will be made into a compendium volume and released around the world. It’s Cardcaptor Sakura, there’s no way this wouldn’t happen!
Now, it’s time to do your part! Crack open your old Manga volumes, or dust of your old VHS tapes of the series and start brushing up on all that sweet Cardcaptor Sakura knowledge in preparation for this release. You know it’s what must be done!
