Any avid reader of this here website will know that I have quite a big “thing” for anything related to the odd but interesting Japanese juvenile delinquent sub-culture. Characters like Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, Tatsumi Oga from Beelzebub, Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho, and many other characters from your favorite Anime, manga or Video Games all fall under that particular category.
Now that you understand exactly what I’m talking about, I’d like to draw your attention to a video game series developed by Spike Chunsoft called Kenka Bancho. This series of brawler video game titles mostly got a Japan-exclusive release, apart from one sole Western traveler; a game called Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble, maybe some of you out there have heard of it. Well the same company that, in the past, made these incredible action titles have only just announced that they are adding another title to the long Kenka Bancho lineage, but it’s unlike any of the game that came before, this upcoming PlayStation Vita exclusive will not have you battling other delinquents for the sake of supremacy…it’ll have you dating them.
In your standard Kenka Bancho title, you, the player, are tasked with beating the everliving hell out of other juvenile delinquents much like yourself, adding their crews to your ever-expanding one. The newly-announced Otome game, simply title “Kenka Bancho Otome” at this point in time, will put you in the shoes of a student attending a school run entirely by delinquents. The aim of the game is not to fight your way through the hordes of powerful enemies that stand before you, instead you’ll be doing everything in your power to make them fall for you, much like all, if not most, of the other Otome games currently on the market.
Despite it being incredibly different from the games that have come before it, Kenka Bancho Otome will apparently feature some of the same gameplay mechanics as previous titles, one of which will be the “Menchi Beam” which, in the most basic terms, is a beam that delinquents shoot from their eyes to intimidate others, and yes…it’s a literal beam. Spike Chunsoft’s press release made it seem as though there will actually be some sort of combat in the upcoming game by saying the new game will be a “love adventure story told through punches“. Whatever the case…I’ll definitely be getting this game, one way or another. Chances are it will not make it to the West, like most other Otome games, but seeing as it is a Kenka Bancho game, I can’t help but want it with every fibre of my body. Also, come one, a video game wherein which strong, young men are willing to fight for your love…that’s a game I can really get into.
Kenka Bancho Otome is set to hit Japan for the PlayStation Vita on the 17th of March next year, with no word at all right now regarding a Western release. As mentioned above…it’s probably never going to hit local shores, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be excited! I am!
