If you are an anime fan, you have no doubt encountered the phenomenon known as Yaoi or BL (Boys Love). Well the rest of the world who aren’t initiated into the world of anime have just gotten a healthy injection of Boys Love with the latest episode of satirical cartoon series South Park tackling what happens when the town of South Park become swept up in the Yaoi fandom.

The episode is rather clever in the way in which it utilizes Yaoi art to compose a social commentary on the ways in which society’s views on gay relationships has and hasn’t changed. Focusing on the real world yaoi fandom of two side characters Tweek and Craig, the episode explores these two boys becoming the focal point of a yoai fandom in the town of South Park and ultimately accepting amidst utter confusion that they must simply be gay because the Japanese decided so.

Interestingly enough South Park uses Yaoi fanart as a way to show that while the world is generally more accepting of homosexual relationships and even going to extreme levels to show support for them, society still treats gay couples as something abnormal or different from what is perceived as ‘normal’. Although it make be in a positive light it is every bit as damaging as negative response. Who would have thought that Yaoi could illicit such profound and on point social commentary?

Check out some clips of the Yaoi focused episode below. What are some of your favourite boys love pairings? Let us know in the comments section.
