A new ATLUS game is always exciting, especially when it is an addition to the long lineage that is Shin Megami Tensei. The exact same thing can be said for Intelligent Systems’ Fire Emblem series of tactical role-playing games. I’m sure I don’t have to explain why a combination of these two popular video game series’ is going to set the world of Japanese pop culture ablaze with elation. Not only is it self-explanatory, but the recent update of the game’s official website features two new videos that give audiences a glimps at the game in action, showing us all that this is one title to absolutely not miss out on.
The story is simple, yet mostly unexplained at this point in time: Basically, you play as a young man who wants to be a popular entertainer of sorts. Your party members; they also want to be entertainers of sorts. Something crazy happens one day and, much like that of Persona, you and your friends come into contact with beings of pure malice called Mirages, but the great thing is that you have Mirages of your own which you can call forth to fight by your side. Right now this just seems like a standard Shin Megami Tensei title, considering most of them have a storyline similar to this, but this is where it gets even more exciting. You know those good Mirages I mentioned just above? Well, they’re all based on characters from the Fire Emblem universe, with the main character’s personal Mirage being none other than Chrom from Fire Emblem Awakening.
Now here’s the semi-confusing part: Remember how I mentioned that most, if not all, of the main character cast want to be different types of entertainers? Well, this is mirrored in the Idolsphere; the realm in which the players must travel to in order to save the real world from the utter decimation that will come from allowing Mirages to continue existing. The Idolsphere is where you, the player, will go up against most of the enemies in the game. It is essentially the dungeon-crawling aspect of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, and the place wherein which you’ll see some, for lack of a better term…crazy shit.
Within this realm, you will earn money, experience, and Performa (the weapon-crafting currency) depending on how well you defeat your enemy, so spamming one move and slowly whittling down an opposing Mirage will net you minimum points, but using your enemy’s weakness against them and lining up Session Attacks, wherein which your team will build up a combo, will, in turn, reward you with loot beyond your wildest dreams. This is one of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem’s defining gameplay mechanics and it alone should be enough to get any role-playing game fan excited…but that’s not all it has in store for us.
The two videos released on the Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem official website pretty much goes over what I’ve detailed just above. The difference between my explanation and the videos is that, well…I’m writing this in English and they are all in Japanese, so it’s not wise to have one without the other. One of the videos will take viewers through the overworld, wherein which the player goes about their daily lives as they connect with other characters and prepare to head into the realm of the Mirages, and the second video takes viewers through the dungeon-crawling mechanics as well as the battles they will have to fight while in the Idolsphere. If you’re not excited for Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem by now…these two videos will really change your tune.
