Not coming as any surprise to fans of the long-running fighting game series Street Fighter, it was only a few days ago that Capcom announced the return of the Red Cyclone, Zangief, the the roster of their upcoming game Street Fighter V. Those in the Zangief fan club cheered in delight, but those looking to get some information an another brand-new character winced in disappointment…until Famitsu accidentally released a set of screenshots showcasing the not-yet-announced new character Laura instead of the aforementioned Zangief who was meant to be the star of the featured gallery.
Wearing all green and looking strikingly similar to Australia’s very own Megan Gale (Valkyrie – Mad Max: Fury Road), it was clear that this character was not at all the hulking Russian mass known as Zangief. Famitsu quickly took the pictures down…but unfortunately not quick enough to erase it from the internet; something I’m fairly certain is near impossible. We now know that her name is indeed Laura and fans of the series across the internet who know a little about true-to-life combat sports have gone on to discuss her fighting style which seems to be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Backing up her practice is the stage in which she’s shown fighting on; a place that has an uncanny resemblance to Brazil.
It also looks as though Laura is electrically charged, with some of the screenshots showing that her attacks come paired with what looks to be something along the lines of controlled lightning. If this is the case, which it may certainly be; Laura reminds me of another green Brazilian that can harness the destructive power of electricity. You all know who I’m talking about.
Street Fighter V is currently in development for the PlayStation 4 and the PC with Capcom having mentioned that they plan on releasing it by the end of the fiscal year, meaning it could come out anytime between today and the end of March, 2016. Hopefully some concrete information will be released soon, but until then, enjoy these screen shots of the the new character Laura.
Update: Capcom has officially confirmed Laura Matsuda as a part of the upcoming game’s new roster of characters with an introduction trailer shown at the Brasil Game Show. Capcom also released a written description of the new fighter which is as follows:
Joining the series from her homeland in Brazil, Laura Matsuda is a Jiu-Jitsu specialist, a first for the Street Fighter series. Continuing the tradition of the famed Matsuda fighting style, Laura is constantly looking for strong opponents around the world to defeat, in an effort to spread the Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu’s name and prestige. Laura’s methodical grapple technique comes equipped with a stunning “Thunder Clap” projectile that zaps opponents and leaves them questioning if they should get in close, or keep their distance. By activating her “Spark Show” state, Laura’s projectiles fly further and her attacks and grabs have increased stun damage. Using a variety of quick moving attacks and effective command grabs, Laura will become a favorite for players who enjoy “up close and personal” mind games.
