As I am writing this I feel short of breath because this is not like any other news piece on this website, this news pains me to write. A man who changed gaming for ever and represented something wonderful and larger than life to many gamers around the world has passed away today far too soon at the age of 55. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has passed away on the 11th of July, 2015, after dealing with illness related to a bile duct growth.

Satoru Iwata was a man who lived by the principles of fun, innovative thought and bringing happiness into people’s hearts that Nintendo stood for through and through. To many he was the face of the legendary gaming company and he himself a legendary figure in the gaming industry as such. He stood by the belief that Nintendo should always be about fun first and everything else second. A belief that endeared him to Nintendo fans around the world.

The gaming industry and its community are at a stand still today because what is gaming without Satoru Iwata? It is a tough pill to swallow but it is a question we will have to find an answer for in the days to come as we mourn the loss of this brilliant man. On the news of his passing Nintendo released the follow statement:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

Iwata missed E3 this year due to sickness, leaving many wondering about his well being, but none thought that the situation that the Nintendo President faced was so dire.

The legacy that Iwata leaves behind is one of legendary proportions and is a testament to how greatly this man has affected change in the gaming industry be it working first hand on games or overseeing the entire company that makes them.

He first got into the gaming industry working as a developer on Balloon Fight and later Earthbound for HAL Laboratories. He eventually became the companies Director in 2000 and went on to succeed former President Hiroshi Yamauchi in 2002 a position he had held since. Throughout his tenure as President of Nintendo he oversaw the creation of consoles such as the Gamecube, the Nintendo DS, the Wii and Wii U and more recently the 3DS and New 3DS. The list of games he had a direct hand in making really speaks for itself.

His love for Nintendo as a whole was so strong that he even famously took a significant pay cut during the Wii U’s roughly launch period. He lived and breathed Nintendo and his legacy will live on through his iconic apperances in his Nintendo Direct conferences and of course in every Nintendo game that we play. Satoru Iwata gave so much joy to the world and for that we say thank you. Thank you for the fun, we will never forget all of the wondeful things you have done.

We of SnapThirty would like to send our condolences to the family and friends of Satoru Iwata. Rest in peace Iwata-san you will be sorely missed.
