Despite what many people believe, I truly do think we live in a great time. One of unparalleled acceptance that encourages individuality and proper freedom of choice. Though there’s still much to be changed, and many eyes that need opening, I think we’re all doing a pretty good job at making this world safe for almost anyone to live in no matter who they are, where they’re from, and what they do. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have now hit the same page as the rest of us, announcing that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title Fire Emblem Fates will indeed feature same-sex relationships, a feature not present in the most recent title Fire Emblem: Awakening.
This confirmation comes from an interview Nintendo had with news site Polygon wherein which this was said: “We can confirm that Fire Emblem Fates for Nintendo 3DS, which launches in Japan on June 25, 2015, and is coming to the U.S. and Europe in 2016, includes the possibility for a same-sex marriage to take place between the main character created by the gamer and another character in the game.”
No matter which version you purchase, Conquest or Birthright, you will have the option to pair male with female, male with male, female with female, Dragon Girl with Rabbit Man, whatever it is that your heart desires, and that’s fantastic! As a male in a heterosexual relationship, I’ll be using the bonding option in the new Fire Emblem Fates to create a sort of fan fiction regarding my girlfriend and I that can be lived out in the world of the game. Seeing as I’ve been given the option to do that…it’s only fair that everyone else in the world gets that option too. Well done, Nintendo!
We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game’s scenario and the nature of the game play … In the end of course, the game should be fun to play. We feel that Fire Emblem Fates is indeed enjoyable to play and we hope fans like the game.
