Fans of the Kingdom Hearts franchise are used to remakes and remixes at this point, some love it, some don’t. These remix releases have been the source of a great amount of affectionate response from fans but simultaneously has received a lot of criticism with some fans considering it to be stalling tactics from Square Enix.
At Bandai Namco’s EB Expo 2014 booth, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix was on show and we were lucky enough to get some hands on times with this all too familiar title. The game plays the same as it once did on the PlayStation 2, with the exception of some tighter mechanics and the obvious visual updates.
Obviously if you have never played the original Kingdom Hearts 2 and affiliated titles such as Birth By Sleep, you’re going to get a lot out of this title. On the other hand long time fans of the series are going to find very little on offer from this game. If you have played these games before there isn’t much new in store for you. I got the feeling that these ‘remix’ versions are almost like catch up games for those who missed out. Of course they are all in hype of the long awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, which comes out god knows when.
During my play through of the game I got to tackle the Nightmare Before Christmas world and it is just as fun as I remember it. The adventures with Jack Skellington remain some of the series best and they are brilliantly recaptured in gorgeous HD visuals here. The aesthetics were as crisp as they come and it is honestly nice to see Sora, Donald and Goofy in beautiful HD.
Ultimately there isn’t much that hasn’t been seen before here in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, if you have played the originals then this is little more than a prettied up nostalgia trip. But if you are new to the series these ‘remix’ titles are a great entry point that will get you ready for Kingdom Hearts 3’s eventual release.
It’s nice to get a look back at games of yesteryear and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is a great revision of a PlayStation 2 classic. The game is set for release on the 4th of December, 2014.
