The latest ‘Pokemon’ spinoff video game title was just announced by The Pokemon Company and it is called ‘Pokken Tournament’. The arcade-only fighting game has only received one trailer as of right now and it is looking damn fine! The announcement trailer featured two Pokemon; Lucario and Machamp who went head-to-head just to show us how damn cool a Pokemon fighting game could be.
The internet exploded with excitement at the premise of such a video game but with that excitement also came disappointment, disappointment at the fact that, as of right now, this game has only been announced for Japanese arcades BUT the general audience are keeping up hope that it will eventually make it around the world in the form of a console game. A while back a low quality image began circulating the web, this image featured what looked to be a screenshot of a video game that had a Lucario facing off against a Blaziken, people are now considering this to be the very first image of what has now bee titled ‘Pokken Tournament’.
Having been shown three character so far, each of which happen to be Pokemon that fall under the Fighting-type category, it’s easy to begin assuming that the game will only be featuring that type. This has just been confirmed as untrue. Game producer Katsuhiro Harada came out and commented on the game recently, saying that the development team want people to know that it will not only be Fighting-type Pokemon featured in the game.
This means that any Pokemon with some sort of hand-to-hand fighting ability will be able to take part in what is looking to be one heck of a brutal tournament. This has opened up the floor to an infinite amount of speculative talk regarding who fans think will be on the roster. There was an independently made Pokemon fighting game that got an unofficial release a while back, it was a project headed by a couple of upstart video game developers that was distributed for free on the net. It featured a two dimensional battle system that was fairly reminiscent of games like ‘Street Fighter’.
Much like ‘Pokken Tournament’, ‘Pokemon: Type Wild’ (this indie game) allowed players to fight as Blaziken and Lucario as well as others like Gengar, Swalot, Breloom, Combusken and a few others. I played this game for a short time to see what it was like and I believe that has helped me come to realize that there are a whole bunch of non Fighting-type Pokemon that can really lay the smackdown in some big ways. I’m incredibly hopeful for what’s to come in regards to this game and I think a lot of people out there are on the same side.
My hopes for what Pokemon will be playable in the game? Emboar, Blastoise, Nidoking and Chesnaught just to name a few. The SnapThirty team really want to hear about who you all want to have in the upcoming game so let us know what you think in comments section below. ‘Pokken Tournament’ is set to be released throughout Japanese arcades sometime in 2015.
