New “Afro Samurai” Game In The Works

Remember 2007? Good, because apart from ‘Afro Samurai’ I don’t actually remember much so maybe you could fill me in on what exactly happened that year. As a youngster still in High School, I used to troll the Anime section of any store that had one, buying random box sets or special editions. Really I wanted anything that was already complete, something I could watch in its entirety without waiting…and that’s when ‘Afro Samurai’ came along. It was a perfect release.

It’s broadcast began early 2007 and by the end of the year it was on local shelves thanks to Australia’s own Madman Entertainment. Running for five episode, ‘Afro Samurai’ tells the story of a young man (voiced by non other than Samuel L. Jackson) seeking revenge on the gunfighter who killed his father. It’s set in an odd world that fuses hip-hop/rap culture with what looks to be ancient Japan, something we saw in the series ‘Samurai Champloo’ but something that was unlike the Watanabe series in so many ways. What initially attracted me to this series, apart from what has already been stated, was it’s high level of blood and gore, something I have come to seek out in every Anime I watch.

Now whether or not that’s a good or bad thing is up to you to decide, in my eyes; it helped me move forward in my Anime-loving life. Many years later, this series gave birth to a feature-length film (titled: ‘Resurrection’) and a video game that was released on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. After all these years we’ve finally been graced with some news regarding a brand-new ‘Afro Samurai’ video game title that has been said to be currently in development for the PC and next generation consoles.

The news comes from publishers Versus Evil who have stated that the new game, developed by Redacted Studios, will feature an all-new story with some brand-new characters and gameplay mechanics similar to the original game though massively updated. Apart from that, no real specific information was divulged by the publisher BUT they have done a good job at stirring up hype for the game so let’s hope we hear something more from them before die-hard ‘Afro Samurai’ fans start a riot.
