Films so nice they screened them twice

You heard correctly film buffs, the Japanese Film Festival is returning to Sydney, with a nice theme in tow. Demonstrating the finest that Japanese film has to offer, the JFF Encore – Japan Academy Awards Edition will showcase eight films that have received the highest honours from around the world.

Departures (2008) – Charts a man’s discovery of life through an understanding of death
When the Last Sword is Drawn (2003) – A samurai epic full of drama, suspense and swordplay
Confessions (2010) – Tells of an ice-cold teacher obsessed with seeking revenge for the murder of her four-year-old daughter
Rebirth (2011) – Explores the sensitive issue of a woman on trial for abducting and raising a six-month-old baby
Always – Sunset on Third Street (2005) – Based on Japan’s best-loved comic book series, it is a nostalgic journey back to Tokyo circa 1958.
Tokyo Tower – Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad (2007) – Adaptation of Lily Franky’s autobiography about his profound love for his mother
Key of Life (2012) – tells the story of a failed actor who unwittingly assumes the identity of a hitman
The Kirishima Thing (2012) – Navigates the delicate ecosystem of a high school, showing the butterfly effect of one student’s mysterious disappearance on the school’s precarious social fabric.

Of course this is merely the briefest overview of these eight award winning films. For a truer look, be sure to check out the official site.

Why settle for seeing just one?

Masafumi Konomi (Festival Director) says:

“Every year, the Japan Academy Awards are only announced after the JFF ends, so many great titles fly under the radar and many people miss out on some of the best films in the program. That’s why this year, in addition to our main festival, we’re holding special encore screenings of Japan Academy Award–winning films. These are all great films and our fans deserve another chance to see them. Between them, these titles have each been awarded a combination of best picture, best director, and best screenplay – many being awarded all three!”

So don’t miss out on your second chance to view some marvels of Japanese cinema. The festival will run from July 9th to 11th at Event Cinemas on George Street. To nab some tickets of your own, head to JFF and book quickly. They shan’t last forever.
